Film Scanning

Preserve your film with our professional film scanning service.

Imacon 949

What makes the imacon such a great scanner are two important elements, the film holder and the CCD.

Z

Low noise

The CCD of the 949 is Peltier cooled reducing the noise of the scan significantly, then there are further enhancements in the form of a light diffuser that spreads the light, filling scratches in the film. This significantly reduces the amount of post-processing required.

Z

Accurate scans

The film is essentially curved around an arc (virtual drum) as it is scanned, creating a perfectly flat plane for the scanner to focus on. Other scanners don’t keep the film completely flat resulting in slight focus anomalies toward the centre of your scan.

Z

Razor sharp

the Imacon 949 is known for its extremely high resolution, at 8000dpi optical resolution, it will resolve right down to the film grain.

How your files will be supplied

U

400dpi for originals

This is the resolution that your original will be scanned at. This allows you to enlarge the image if necessary and still keep sharp details.

m

RGB 16bit

Your files will be supplied in 16bit RGB Tiff format.

n

Adobe 1998

Files will be supplied in Adobe 1998 format, other formats such as Pro photo can also be accomodated on request.

-

Max dpi for film

Your film will be scanned at the maximum dpi of the scanner for that film size. This is to allow you to enlarge the images later for various purposes and not have to rescan. The time is actually the setup for the scan not so much the machine scan time.

Q&A

t

What is a raw scan?

This is a scan as it comes from the scanner with no adjustments or cleaning. The shadows and highlights will be adjusted to eliminate clipping.

Can you colour balance and clean the scan?

Yes, we can clean, remove the dust and scratches from the scan, and we can also balance the colour and set the contrast to match the originals as closely as possible. We can also proof the scans with test prints to achieve the best accuracy.

0

What is the maximum size?

Our scanner is A3 but we can scan originals as large as A2, this is done in 2-4 pieces and then stitched together. The stitching is an advanced algorithm and you won’t be able to tell that it was done. We compensate for stretching and bending. Anything bigger and we will have it photographed in multiple pieces for higher quality.
