ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT
In our artists spotlight today we have Filipa Domingues, an award winning film producer and still photographer. Her exceptional photographic work has been featured on the covers of numerous magazines including a spread in National Geographic. We had the wonderful privilege of working with her recently on her “Check My Plants” solo exhibition in Cape Town.

‘Check My Plants’ is a visual feast of rare and unusual plants Filipa shares with the world in her signature photographic style.
Filipa photographs rare and unusual plants, specifically indigenous South African succulents against a black background, using natural light only. This can be quite a challenge, as she has to wait for the perfect light, which only occurs on some days. It’s worth the wait though, as the combination of her passion for photography and our passion for printing excellence, resulted in her first solo exhibition.
To share her printed work with the world, she hand selected Hahnemeuhle photo rag for its exceptional artistic qualities. This paper has a wonderfully soft velvet feel, and high colour gamut lending itself well to this striking project. As this paper is acid and lignin free it is the perfect choice for exhibition quality work that needs to stand the test of time. The matt black inks of the Epson P9000 were particularly important due to the black background found in most of her work.

Ahead of her first solo exhibition in September 2019, Filipa has exclusively curated 4 limited-release ‘CheckMyPlants’ Smeg retro fridges as the ultimate collectors’ items. These bespoke pieces feature her visually spectacular stills of iconic South African plants with Smeg’s black retro fridge as the canvas to perfectly emulate her signature style photography.
