‘Super South’ is a South African, sci-fi, fantasy novel written by Marthinus Kirsten, Shade Schutze and Tiaan Lubbe. The artworks in the novel were created by a collaboration of illustrators consisting of Imile Wepener, Maggie de Vos, Quintus van der Walt, Marthinus Kirsten and Shade Schutze.
The book is set in a dystopian Gauteng, South Africa in the year 2031. After an explosion, new half-human- half-animal mutations were born. A wall was erected around the central city to keep them hidden from the rest of society. Ben ‘Kuduman’ Botes, a man with a complex past, and his furry, alcoholic sidekick, Terry Hops, are drawn together by fate. The odd duo have to work together to stop a crazed dictator from making matters worse…
The creators of the novel have a big passion for comic books, graphic novels and animations, so they decided to write their own South African version and had been working on it since early 2017.
The fantasy tale portrays serious issues that people and animals are exposed to on a daily basis, for example corruption, prejudice and the destruction of our environment. The illustrated novel has a healthy mixture of suspense, satire and a whole lot of badassery that will appeal to young adults and the older generation alike! In addition, they share a big love for animals and will be donating 10% of all book sales to a non-profit organisation called ‘The Rhino Orphanage’.
The novel’s ‘soft launch’ was a big success in August and the ‘Super South’ team will now be heading to Comic Con Africa 2019 over the coming weekend. All of the artworks were printed by the amazing team at Wetink fine art printig in Pretoria.
